Social media reacts to Declan Rice winning Irish Young Player of the Year award

Rice wins Irish YPOTY

It was on Tuesday announced that West Ham’s Declan Rice has won the Irish Young Player of the Year award.

The award ceremony will take place this coming Sunday.

However, Rice has recently pledged his future to England and is expected to receive his first call-up on Wednesday for England’s upcoming fixtures.

The FAI have since explained why Rice won the Irish YPOTY award even though he chose England over them:

“At the time of the vote, Declan Rice was an Ireland international and qualified for the Young Player category.”

Declan Rice impresses for West Ham

Rice has had an incredibly impressive season for West Ham.

At just 20 years of age, Rice displays an understanding of the game well beyond his years.

The young midfielder is strong, agile a solid passer of the ball and is slowly adding goals to his game.

Given all of this, it’s no surprise that Gareth Southgate was eager for Rice to make the switch to England.

Twitter reaction

With Rice now an England player, him winning the Irish YPOTY award has been getting a fair bit of attention online.
