Social media gives Smalling’s challenge on Leo Messi the meme treatment

The real way to stop Messi?!

While it was a pretty entertaining first half, it was Chris Smalling’s challenge on Lionel Messi which had people talking on social media.

Barcelona travelled to Old Trafford looking to give themselves an advantage before the second leg of their Champions League clash at the Camp Nou next week.

As expected, it was Lionel Messi who helped give Barcelona that advantage.

The Argentine chipped a ball to the back post for Luis Suarez whose header deflected into the back of the net off Luke Shaw.

It didn’t get much better for Luke Shaw either.

That’s because just eight minutes later the defender was booked, meaning he will miss the second leg at the Camp Nou.

Though, it was Shaw’s defensive teammate Chris Smalling who had social media talking.

Smalling pokes the bees nest

That’s because Smalling went into a pretty bad challenge with Messi.

As the ball came towards the pair in the air, Smalling jumped for the ball but caught Messi with a combination of his shoulder and arm.

Safe to say, it didn’t look pretty and Messi fell to the floor with a cut on the bridge of his nose.

After a lengthy stoppage, Messi was patched up and the game carried on.

Though, social media were aware of what Chris Smalling had just done – angered the one man you don’t want to anger.

Social media reacts

Many took to Twitter to give the clash the meme treatment, as many often do.

While some suggested that Smalling had found the secret way to keep Messi down, others just suggested that the Englishman had made a grave mistake.
