Six Chelsea players have reportedly contracted Covid-19 with two more stars also in isolation

Chelsea vs Brighton

Chelsea are set to get their 2020/21 Premier League campaign underway next month.

Unlike Manchester United and Manchester City, the Blues were not granted an extended break, despite having faced Bayern Munich on August 8th.

As a result, Frank Lampard and co. will start their season along with the remaining Premier League sides when gameweek one kicks off on September 12th.

In a slight advantage for Chelsea, though, their clash with Brighton is not due to take place until Monday the 14th.

The last time that Chelsea took on the Seagulls, they were held to a 1-1 draw, though it’s worth noting that Brighton haven’t actually beaten the Londoners since 1933.

Chelsea players test positive for Covid-19

The Brighton clash will also likely come as the first in which we see a number of Chelsea’s latest additions, such as Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, in the club’s colours.

But whilst Werner and Ziyech could well feature, a number of the Blues’ old guard may not be up to full fitness by the time the Brighton game comes around.

The reason for this is that Frank Lampard’s squad currently features eight first-team players in coronavirus isolation.

As per a report from the Telegraph on Thursday:

Chelsea have eight players in coronavirus quarantine with Frank Lampard’s pre-season plans severely disrupted before the new season starts for the club in three weeks’ time.

It is understood that six of the players have the virus, with a further two quarantining because they have been in close contact with those affected.

Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic are confirmed as being in quarantine, after the quartet recently visited the Greek island of Mykonos together.

The remaining Chelsea players believed to be in quarantine, and missing pre-season as a result, are Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Emerson and Michy Batshuayi.

It is also worth noting that both Mount and Abraham have recently been selected to play for England against Iceland and Denmark, with the first of these fixtures scheduled for September 5th. However, the Telegraph report that the Chelsea duo’s involvement is now in doubt.

None of the eight aforementioned stars have yet publicly confirmed whether or not they have the virus. Both Mount and Abraham are seemingly in good spirits, though, after welcoming new Chelsea signing Ben Chilwell to the club on Wednesday evening:
