Simeone to Serie A
Giovanni Simeone is set to follow in the footsteps of his father by moving to Europe. The son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego, he’s making the big journey from Argentina. Mundo Deportivo reports that he’s signing a five-year deal with Serie A side Genoa.
Simeone senior played in Italy for six years. Joining Inter Milan after his first stint with Atletico in 1997, there he won the UEFA Cup before moving to Lazio in 1999. He helped the Eagles win only their second Serie A title. It was a glorious few seasons for them. If Giovanni achieves half as much as his father then it will be a successful sojourn.
Getting to know Giovanni
His career up until this point has been promising. Still only 21 years old, he struggled to nail down a place in the River Plate first team. Showing his potential in flashes, he went to Banfield on loan to further his progress. That was a wise move.
After scoring 12 goals in all competitions for them he was selected for Argentina’s Olympic team. Fans will be able to get a glimpse of Simeone’s talent at the tournament. The transfer is said to have cost €3 million. He’s already completed a medical.
