‘Shouldn’t be on the pitch’: Tottenham fans furious as Aymeric Laporte nets League Cup final winner for Manchester City

Man City vs Tottenham

Sunday’s marquee clash of course came in the form of the 2021 League Cup final.

This year’s showpiece saw Manchester City and Tottenham face off, with the latter aiming to secure their first piece of silverware since 2008 – also the League Cup.

Man City, on the other hand, were hopeful of continuing their League Cup dominance, after winning it in four of the previous five years.

In addition, after being ousted from the FA Cup by Chelsea earlier this month, the Sky Blues required a win to keep their treble hopes alive.

Man City triumph

The clash began in somewhat predictable fashion, with Manchester City dominating the early exchanges and Spurs penned inside their own half, keen to hit on the counter.

The first big chance of the game came 25 minutes in, after Eric Dier’s poor pass led to Phil Foden being handed a free shot at Hugo Lloris’ goal. Toby Alderweireld, though, produced a superb block.

Raheem Sterling then saw a deflected effort flash across the face of the Spurs goal.

Despite all of Man City’s domination, the score remained 0-0 heading into the interval.

The second 45 began in much the same vein as the first, with the Sky Blues on top and Spurs looking frail defensively.

City were still unable to find a breakthrough, however, as Ilkay Gundogan’s headed effort flew over the bar.

Gundogan then whipped in a great cross towards an advancing Riyad Mahrez, but the winger was just shy of reaching it.

Ryan Mason responded to Tottenham’s lack of endeavour by bringing on Gareth Bale and Moussa Sissoko.

City’s dominance, though, continued despite the changes, and Lloris was once again forced to make a top save from Mahrez’s curling effort from the edge of the box.

Then, the Citizens were finally rewarded with a breakthrough when Aymeric Laporte headed home from a corner 82 minutes in. City, from here, held on, to secure their latest piece of silverware under Pep Guardiola.

Spurs fans furious with Laporte

On the back of the clash, meanwhile, Spurs’ fans are understandably not too pleased.

However, their anger has not been directed at the eventual result, but instead at City’s goalscorer on the day.

Laporte was shown a yellow card on the stroke of half-time, for stopping a Spurs counter. The Lilywhites faithful, though, are of the opinion that this should have come as his second booking.

This comes with Laporte having escaped a caution for a clear foul on Lucas Moura early in the first-half. Had he been booked, the Frenchman would of course have been sent off later on, and not been on the pitch to crush Spurs’ League Cup hopes.

Just some of the tweets from Tottenham’s fans, expressing their displeasure with Laporte’s goal, can be seen below:
