Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has hinted that he could remain at the club beyond this summer, having looked much improved of late.
27-year-old centre-half Mustafi has been on the books at the Emirates since 2016, when he made the big-money move to north London from Spanish giants Valencia.
However, despite his £35 million+ price-tag, and widespread excitement surrounding his signature, the German’s Arsenal stint has since proven largely-underwhelming.
Impressive showings on Mustafi’s part have all-too frequently been spoiled by high-profile mistakes on the part of the stopper, the latest series of which essentially cost his side a top-4 Premier League finish over the final weeks of last season.
As such, it had been widely-predicted that the former Sampdoria man would be on the move last summer, as Arsenal continued to introduce fresh blood to the heart of the club’s defence.
In the end, though, despite rampant speculation, Mustafi stayed put.
And the World Cup winner has, in particular since Mikel Arteta’s appointment, gone on to take advantage of this opportunity.
Mustafi has been handed starts in all of Arsenal’s last 6 outings across all competitions, with the capital giants having gone undefeated across this stretch, whilst earning clean sheets in 3 straight fixtures over the last 3 weeks.
As such, speaking on the back of another impressive showing in the club’s Europa League victory over Olympiacos last night, the German was drawn on his future at the Emirates.
When asked whether his recent form could yet see him carve out an extended stint in north London, Mustafi refused to rule out the possibility:
‘I have always taken things day by day. We had a game on Thursday, we have the next important game at the weekend and as long as I am playing for a club I always gave everything until the last minute.’
‘When I decide, or when the club and I decide, it is going to continue I am happy, if not then we have to go forward.’
