Sheffield United vs Watford betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Sheffield United vs Watford prediction: Sheffield United 2-0 Watford

Bottom side Watford bagged their first win under new manager Nigel Pearson, and a massive one at that. Watford will be looking to push on, having kept two clean sheets in their last three matches.

Although Watford’s season may have turned a corner, it’s hard to look past a Sheffield United victory for this one. Chris Wilder’s side have been one of the Premier League’s surprise packages this season and are seriously challenging for a European berth.

Sheffield United are aiming to win four consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since 1993.

Sheffield United vs Watford: Who will win?

Sheffield United have won three Premier League matches in a row. The Blades are 5/6 favourites to win while a Watford victory is priced at 10/3. The draw can be backed at 13/5.

Only four sides have conceded fewer goals at home than Sheffield United’s nine. The Blades are aiming for a third successive clean sheet. Sheffield United are 5/4 to keep a clean sheet on Thursday.

Oliver McBurnie scored the winner last time out and is expected to keep his place in the side. McBurnie is 9/2 to open the scoring and 6/4 to score anytime.

Sheffield United vs Watford Premier League match preview

The Premier League season will reach the halfway mark when Sheffield United host Watford at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day.

Watford’s five-match winless run came to an end on Sunday. Despite their impressive 2-0 win over Manchester United, they remain bottom of the table.

Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring, although he has a David de Gea blunder to thank for that. Minutes later, Troy Deeney scored his first league goal of the campaign from the penalty spot to double Watford’s advantage.

Six points from safety, Watford will remain in the relegation zone regardless of their result on Boxing Day.

The Hornets have only won one of their nine away matches and lost each of their last three away from Vicarage Road. They have conceded the joint-most goals (19) and scored the joint-fewest (5) on the road.

A third consecutive win for Sheffield United on Saturday saw them climb up to fifth in the table. Oliver McBurnie scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at Brighton. Remarkably, the Blades are just four points behind a top-four spot.

Thursday’s match will be only the fourth Premier League meeting between the two sides. Sheffield United have never lost to Watford in the competition and that seems unlikely to change on Thursday.

The two sides played out a 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road in October. Dean Henderson was named the man of the match.

The last time Sheffield United hosted Watford in the Premier League was in 2007 when a Chris Powell own goal handed the Blades the victory.

Sheffield United team news vs Watford

Chris Wilder practically has a fully fit squad to choose from. Back-up goalkeeper Simon Moore is the Blades’ only doubt but Dean Henderson will start in goal regardless.

John Fleck is available again following suspension and is expected to return to the starting eleven.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, Wilder may opt to rotate his side a little. Lys Mousset could replace David McGoldrick up top.

Club captain Billy Sharp was an unused substitute last time out, while Mo Besic – on loan from Everton – made a late cameo from the bench.

Watford team news vs Sheffield United

Nigel Pearson has a lot more absentees than his opposite number, although he has little reason to make wholesale changes following the win over Manchester United.

Abdoulaye Doucoure will serve a one-match suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign. Roberto Pereyra could deputise for Doucoure in midfield.

Jose Holebas will miss out with an ankle injury.

Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, Sebastian Prodl and Daryl Janmaat are all-long term injury absentees.

Watford’s backline is unlikely to change but Adam Masina provides an alternate option at the back if Pearson opts for rotation.
