Chris Wilder has recently revealed his opinion that Manchester United would be making the ‘morally correct’ decision by allowing Dean Henderson to remain a Sheffield United player for the remainder of the campaign.
23-year-old shot-stopper Henderson has spent the last couple of seasons on loan with Sheffield United.
After impressing during a stint in League One with Shrewsbury, Henderson subsequently made the step up to the Championship last season, where he went on to play an integral role in United’s return to the Premier League.
Across 45 league appearances, the English talent racked up 21 clean sheets, cementing himself as a firm fan favourite at Bramall Lane.
And Henderson’s stellar form has since carried into his first experience of top-flight football.
Amid Sheffield United’s impressive campaign to date, the former Carlisle United youth has conceded just 22 goals across 27 appearances.
This is a defensive record bettered only by top of the table Liverpool.
‘We are not a threat’
Henderson’s presence between the posts at Bramall Lane for the remainder of the campaign, though, is no longer a certainty.
This comes with the COVID-19 pandemic having thrown contracts across world football into doubt.
As things stand, the terms of Henderson’s deal with Sheffield United are due to expire on the 30th of June.
This of course poses a problem for the Blades, with the extended Premier League season expected to drag into July, or even August.
Manchester United, for their part, would be well within their rights to refuse an extension to Henderson’s loan at Bramall Lane.
And the board at Old Trafford could well opt to do so, with the Red Devils and Sheffield United currently separated by just 2 points in the English top-flight table.
In fact, if the latter pick up a win in their game in hand over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, they would jump above United into 5th.
Nevertheless, one individual who has recently unsurprisingly urged the Manchester giants to do what is ‘morally’ right, by allowing Henderson to finish out the season in Sheffield, is Chris Wilder.
Speaking in an interview with beIN Sports, Wilder was drawn on the situation of his current no.1, with the Blades boss having explained:
‘I personally think it will be morally correct to leave [Henderson] playing with Sheffield United for the last 10 games of the season.’
‘Because of the legalities and the situation regarding the expiry of the loan, they might take that decision [to recall him], but we are not a threat to Man United.’
‘They will be quite happy with the players that they have got that will see them through the season.’
