Alan Shearer on Manchester United
In his weekly column in the Sun on Monday, Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has focused his attention on Manchester United.
It was a good weekend at Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho’s men beat Liverpool 2-1.
Marcus Rashford stole the headlines with a first half brace for United.
Eric Bailly put Liverpool on the board in the second half when he turned a Sadio Mane cross into David De Gea’s goal.
‘Liverpool & Tottenham in Jose Mourinho’s shadow’
Saturday’s win for United gave them a five point lead over Liverpool.
Tottenham, who are in third place after they beat Bournemouth 4-1 on Sunday, after four points behind Jose Mourinho’s team.
Yet, Shearer has boldly proclaimed that Man United are a better side than Liverpool or Spurs in the Sun:
There are real signs now under Jose Mourinho that they are on their way back.
For all the praise that has been lavished on Saturday’s opponents Liverpool and Spurs this season, it is United who will be the best team in the country — after City.
No, it is not always thrills and spills but it is effective.
Shearer also then gazed into his crystal ball to claim that if Mourinho was the Tottenham manager, Spurs would still be in the Champions League.
Juventus knocked Tottenham out the UCL with a 2-1 win at Wembley. But Shearer has argued:
I heard talk earlier in the season that the likes of Mauricio Pochettino is the future and Mourinho the past.
But last midweek Mourinho would have taken advantage of that draw Spurs got in Turin and the one-goal advantage at Wembley to see his side through to in the Champions League.
