Season ending injury: Liverpool’s Joel Matip blow before Man City

Liverpool’s Joel Matip injury blow

Horrible news has broken on Tuesday lunchtime, a day before the Champions League quarterfinal with Man City.

Defender Joel Matip is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

That’s been confirmed by Liverpool on their website, as Matip has suffered a thigh injury. Liverpool have told their fans the following:

The centre-back sustained the issue during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Matip was able to complete the full 90 minutes of the fixture, but afterwards medical assessment on the thigh revealed surgery is expected to be required to correct the problem.

The operation is likely to end the 26-year-old’s involvement in the remainder of the 2017-18 season.

Dejan Lovren will now be Virgil Van Dijk’s obvious partner until the end of the season at centre-half.

Lovren had already edged above Matip in the pecking order before the announcement of his injury.

Will Matip’s injury also see Ragnar Klavan come back into the Liverpool side? Could he play against Everton at the weekend?

Adam Lallana & Emre Can

Jurgen Klopp’s injury problems are racking up.

Two key players, Emre Can and Adam Lallana, are likely to be out of contention.

Lallana, of course, could be out for the rest of the season following an injury sustained last weekend at Crystal Palace.

As for German international Emre Can, the situation is touch-and-go. He’s nursing a back problem which saw his withdraw from the German national camp.

Joe Gomez is also injured too.

As for Man City, they are sweating over the fitness of Sergio Aguero.

Aguero has been out of action for the past few weeks. Gabriel Jesus is likely to start up front at Anfield.
