Schmeichel: David de Gea treated unfairly & will be Man United’s No.1 for many years to come

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has moved to defend David de Gea, as the Spaniard continues to struggle for form.

De Gea struggling

It’s fair to say that David de Gea has been going through something of a rough patch at Man United for a while now.

The Spaniard was, for several years, by far and away United’s best player, and perhaps even the best goalkeeper in the English top-flight.

Over the last two seasons, however, de Gea hasn’t exactly been at his best.

Shortly before football was brought to a halt in March, de Gea made a costly mistake vs Everton, leading to the following stat circulating online:

More recently, meanwhile, de Gea produced the latest in a growing list of high-profile errors, this time vs Chelsea.

During the FA Cup semi-final clash between the Blues and Red Devils, de Gea was not at his best for Olivier Giroud’s opener.

It would be Mason Mount’s strike just moments into the second 45, though, which raised eyebrows even further:

Obviously, de Gea can’t solely be blamed for United crashing out of the FA Cup, but his poor goalkeeping certainly didn’t help.

And with Dean Henderson waiting in the wings, some have begun to call for the English shot-stopper to replace de Gea at Old Trafford.

One man who seemingly doesn’t approve of such a view, however, is the aforementioned Peter Schmeichel, who recently voiced the opinion that de Gea is being treated unfairly:

“De Gea’s one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League for the last I don’t know how many years.

“One of the things I believe is that the way Ole’s changed the way the team plays hasn’t fitted in with the way that De Gea has played in the last couple of years and so he would have had to make changes to his game.

“And in making changes you’re always making mistakes. If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t really learn.

“They’ve now got third place, they’ve got the Europa League to focus on now, he comes back with a couple of weeks break, comes back to a new season, he’ll be alright.

“I see David de Gea as the goalkeeper for Manchester United for many years to come and I think he has been treated unfairly in all honesty.”
