Schalke vs Manchester City betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Schalke vs Manchester City prediction: Schalke 1-2 Manchester City

Manchester City will be looking to keep their hopes of a quadruple alive when they travel to Germany.

Despite winning five of their last six away matches, City have struggled to reproduce their home form when playing on the road this season.

Schalke head into the match on a poor run of form, having won just two of their last 10 Bundesliga matches.

Schalke vs Manchester City: Who will win?

City are overwhelming favourites to win at 2/7. Schalke are priced at 10/1 while the draw is 11/2.

Pep Guardiola’s side tend to score far fewer goals on the road than they do at the Etihad. They also concede many more. Both teams to score is 1/1 while under 3.5 goals is priced at 8/13.

With 9 goals in his last six appearances, Sergio Aguero is in blistering form and will be hoping to add to his two Champions League goals this season. Aguero is 12/5 to open the scoring and 8/15 to score anytime.

Schalke vs Manchester City Champions League match preview

Manchester City travel to Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night to take on Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

Manchester City won their fourth consecutive match on Saturday, winning 4-1 at League Two side Newport County to progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Leroy Sane, Phil Foden (2) and Riyad Mahrez were among the goals although the scoreline somewhat flattered the Premier League leaders.

Despite losing their opening game of the competition at home to Lyon, City topped Group F with four wins and a draw. City were the second-highest scorers of the group stage with 16 goals.

Schalke finished runners-up in Group D, behind Porto but ahead of Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow. Domenico Tedesco’s side ended the group stage unbeaten at home.

Schalke remain 14th in the Bundesliga following Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Freiburg. Suat Serder was sent off in the first half but is available for Wednesday’s match.

Schalke’s last win at this stage of the competition came back in 2011 – en route to the semi-finals.

The two sides have played each other three times previously, with City winning two and losing one.

Schalke suffered a 5-0 defeat the last time they hosted English opposition in the Champions League.

Schalke team news vs Manchester City

Forward Breel Embolo is among Schalke’s long list of absentees for Wednesday.

Guido Burgstaller made his return from injury on Saturday and is expected to lead the line.

Alessandro Schopf (knee) and Steven Skrzybski (hamstring) are also ruled out through injury.

Benjamin Stambouli suffered a fractured cheekbone and is doubtful for the clash while Omar Mascerll is suspended.

Former Spurs midfield Nabil Bentaleb is expected to start in midfield. Bentaleb is Schalke’s leading scorer in all competitions this season with six goals.

Highly-rated Rabbi Matondo could feature against his former club. The 18-year-old winger recently signed from City in January and has been added to Schalke’s Champions League squad.

Former City defender Matija Nastasic is likely to start against his old club.

Stambouli and Man City target Sebastian Rudy will miss the return leg if they pick up a yellow card.

Manchester City team news vs Schalke

Sergio Aguero was given the night off against Newport as Guardiola made six changes to his starting eleven.

Gabriel Jesus is set to miss out with a hamstring injury, meaning Aguero will start up front.

John Stones could miss up to two weeks with a reported groin problem. With Vincent Kompany also out injured, Nicolas Otamendi is expected to partner Amyric Laporte in the heart of City’s defence.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has started the last two matches at left-back but faces competition from Danilo.

Guardiola has insisted that Benjamin Mendy will not be rushed back into action, despite returning to training.

Leroy Sane could feature against his former club. Sane signed for Manchester City form Schalke in 2016.

Otamendi, Aguero and Fernandinho are all one booking away from a suspension.

It remains to be seen whether or not Pep will rest one or two players for Sunday’s EFL Cup final clash against Chelsea.
