Robbie Savage claims Liverpool’s UCL group could affect PL title hopes

Can Liverpool compete domestically and on the European stage?

Ex-Premier League star Robbie Savage has claimed that Liverpool’s Champions League group draw could affect their Premier League title hopes.

The Reds are seen to be possibly the closest competitors to Manchester City this season after impressing in the Champions League last season.

They have also added Alisson Becker, Naby Keita and Fabinho to their side.

Though, they drew Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League group stage.

That is important because the next couple of months are full of huge games for the side in both the Premier League and Europe.

Liverpool will face Tottenham and PSG over the next few weeks before two games against Chelsea.

That will be followed by clashes with Napoli and Manchester City.

Balancing act

Now, Robbie Savage has claimed that Liverpool’s updated fixture list could play havoc with their Premier League hopes.

‘Liverpool may look the real deal, but I fear their thankless Champions League draw could have a major impact on this season’s title race,’ he explained in his Daily Mirror column.

‘That will test the depth of the Reds’ expensively-refurbished squad to the limit — and I hope it does not drain them of firepower when it matters in the Premier League.

‘Can they sustain a title challenge and go on another Champions League run?

‘You would like to think so, and it’s important for Klopp that he wins a trophy – at home or in Europe – to have something tangible to show for his work.

‘But after Thursday’s draw, I feel as if the odds have tilted more in City’s favour.

‘They were my favourites to win the European Cup before a ball was kicked anyway, and when you look at their Champions League group, there is every chance the Blues will be through to the knockout stages with a couple of group games to spare.’
