Barcelona’s Umtiti speaks
Samuel Umtiti is officially a Barcelona player and the France international gave his first interview since the move from Lyon to the club’s in-house channel. The defender was on the brink of a €25 million move before Euro 2016. His value is arguably higher now.
Although he was criticised for his position when Portugal forward Eder scored the winning goal in the final, he left the tournament with his reputation enhanced. When he was drafted in for the quarter-final against Iceland he was making his debut.
A subsequent commanding performance in the semi-final win over Germany confirmed his potential. He’s under six foot but carries an imposing presence. Powerful and fast, perhaps crucially, Umtiti is also decent on the ball.
Speaking about the switch, Umtiti admitted he couldn’t wait to meet his teammates. To join the biggest club in the world is a dream come true. However, it’s nothing less than the 22-year-old deserves. He’s been a star for Lyon since breaking into the first team at 18.
