The most decorated African footballer of all time, Samuel Eto’o has every right to show off his glittering list of honours. The circumstances surrounding their latest exhibition were most unfortunate, however. The 35-year-old Cameroonian striker appeared to accuse his current club, Antalyaspor, of racism in an Instagram post.
The former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea striker wrote: “Reminder – perhaps some people do not feel respect for me because I am black. But I am not going to come down from the level I have reached.
“I have been in this game for 18 years.”
He later confirmed that this wasn’t aimed at Antalyaspor chairman Safak Ozturk and was instead a retort to everyday trolls. Ozturk doesn’t seem ready to believe this excuse. Eto’o won’t be available for selection until the matter is resolved internally: “No player is above the interests of Antalyaspor. Everyone must know their place.”
The striker joined the Turkish club in 2015.
