Ahead of Liverpool’s UCL clash with Red Star Belgrade, Jurgen Klopp has provided fitness updates on James Milner, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.
Sadio Mane, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum fitness updates
Speaking about Mane, Milner and Wijnaldum, Klopp stated:
“Millie looks fine and should be OK, Gini got a knock on his Achilles but should be OK and Sadio trained and should be fine.
“[We have] a couple of problems, but still enough players to choose from tomorrow night.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold is also expected to start at right-back on Wednesday ahead of Joe Gomez.
Jurgen Klopp on Red Star Belgrade threat
Klopp also spoke at length about the threat Red Star could pose to Liverpool:
“Defending compact helps a lot. Red Star are the dominating side in Serbia, winning 80-90% in their league, but the Champions League is different.
“They did well against Napoli, who, yes, had more shots on target, but they did well.
“Against PSG, if Neymar starts scoring then nobody can defend that, but it’s all about how they are able to defend and create chances and I know they can do that.
“They have different strikers to line up. They are tall and quick and have good footballers and their full-backs are really leggy and quick and offensive oriented.
“Red Star have a clear structure. Serbian teams are always organised and they know how to defend and are not scared to be aggressive.
“We have to be prepared to fight for every square metre of the pitch.”
Liverpool vs Red Star Belgrade
Liverpool take on Red Star on Wednesday in what is perhaps their easiest group stage game.
Liverpool are in Group C for this year’s Champions League along with Red Star, PSG and Napoli.
The Reds would kick off their UCL campaign by earning an impressive 3-2 victory over Ligue 1 giants PSG.
However, a poor display would then see Liverpool lose 1-0 to Napoli.
As a result, Liverpool will be desperate to pick up all three points on Wednesday to ensure they qualify from their group.
Red Star have drawn one vs Napoli and lost to PSG in their first two UCL games this year.
