The road to recovery is almost over
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set to make his competitive return from injury as Chelsea’s U23 squad face off against Arsenal on Monday night.
The Englishman has not featured competitively for Chelsea since suffering an Achilles injury during a friendly with the New England Revolution before the Europa League final last May.
Before his injury, Loftus-Cheek had impressed, and was starting to claim a midfield spot as his own.
However, his injury was a huge setback, with the player now set to have a fight on his hands to force his way into Frank Lampard’s plans.
His first taste of football following his injury came against a Brentford B side in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.
Thankfully for Loftus-Cheek, he will have another chance to impress next Monday.
Loftus-Cheek to feature in his first competitive match
According to the Mail, Loftus-Cheek has been ‘penciled in’ to feature at some point against Arsenal’s U23 squad.
That would be his first competitive game back after injury.
There is no mention of whether he will start the game, or whether he will come off the bench for some minutes.
Though, the Mail do mention that Loftus-Cheek has been training with the first-team since the end of January.
Despite the positivity surrounding the midfielder’s injury, the Mail also claim that Chelsea ‘are being cautious and determined not to rush the final part of his rehabilitation.’
That would certainly be smart, considering the scale of injury.
Whether Loftus-Cheek will be back soon or not, this is no doubt another big step in his road to recovery.
