Roy Hodgson gives injury update on Crystal Palace’s James McCarthy

Crystal Palace snatch victory vs Brighton

Crystal Palace travelled to Brighton in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off.

Both sides headed into the tie in fairly poor form, with Brighton the closer of the two outfits to the relegation zone.

It would be the Seagulls who dominated a good chunk of the game, though.

Yet, despite Brighton’s early dominance, it was Crystal Palace who broke the deadlock 70 minutes in, via top scorer, Jordan Ayew.

Palace then had a couple of good opportunities to kill the game off, but their goal-shy attackers failed to take them.

Nevertheless, the Eagles were able to hold out for a 1-0 win, putting their points total at 36, and all but guaranteeing their Premier League survival for another year.

Hodgson on James McCarthy

Despite picking up a crucial victory over Brighton, Palace were dealt one blow on Saturday.

James McCarthy was withdrawn at half-time vs Graham Potter’s side, and replaced by Jairo Riedewald.

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has since provided an update on McCarthy.

Hodgson confirmed that McCarthy was withdrawn due to a hamstring injury:

“It’s injury unfortunately, he was feeling his hamstring. He was tempted I think to go and give it another five or 10 minutes to see how it goes but the doc, Zaf, Ray [Lewington] and myself made a decision between us that it wasn’t worth taking that chance – not when we had fully fit players on the bench like Jairo.” As quoted by Crystal Palace’s official website.

The Eagles’ next tie sees them play host to Watford on Saturday, March 7th.

And whilst Watford are still very much in the relegation scrap, they did end Liverpool’s unbeaten run on Saturday, and will likely be brimming with confidence for the Palace tie.
