Roy Hodgson claims he’ll wait a year for a new Crystal Palace deal

By Keith Jones

No rush

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has claimed he will not rush into a new deal with the club, and that he thinks in a year, he will sit down with the club and look at what is best for everyone – and it may well be a new deal.

It may also mean him leaving the club, and that’s something he says he has no issue doing, given at this point he has more than enough money and only wants to manage a club where he’s making a real difference.

He said to Standard Sport: “I wouldn’t ask [chairman] Steve [Parish] to do that at the moment. I’d say to him: ‘Look, I’m not going to be running away.

“If in a year’s time, we are still where we are today and things are going as they are, the relationship is still good and you still think I’m the right man for the job, let’s talk about it then’.

“I don’t need to be tied up for longer periods of time. I didn’t come to Crystal Palace to get long-term contracts. My long-term future financially is secure. I didn’t need that.

“I came to do the job that needs to be done on a daily basis. All the time I want to do that job and Steve thinks I’m the right man, then we will continue. And when the day comes when one of us thinks it is not right, we’ll shake hands and walk away.”

One thing Palace have had to contend with this season – and especially since Hodgson took over is a huge amount of injuries and that does not seem to be letting up for them.

Given how close it is at the bottom of the table, they can’t afford for points to be dropped and need their key players back as soon as possible.

Of course, one man who they might expect a whole deal more from is forward Christian Benteke, who has been doing little this season – and for someone of his reputation, they’d expect far more goals.
