Ross Barkley is out for ‘2-3 weeks’ as Dean Smith is confident in back-up options
Barkley out
Ahead of Aston Villa’s trip to West Ham on Monday, Dean Smith has delivered a hammer blow to fans hoping to see the fine form of Ross Barkley continue.
The England international has a goal and an assist in his 8 appearances for Villa. Including a goal in the 7-2 victory over Liverpool.
The boss starts with an update on Ross Barkley…
“Ross has a hamstring injury and he’s out for two or three weeks; it’s not as bad as we first feared.

“Ross has a hamstring injury and he’s out for two or three weeks; it’s not as bad as we first feared,” said Smith. “We have a number of options and we’ll continue working on them.”
Smith has certainly got options with Jack Grealish who can play centrally with a number of wide options circling. Bertrand Traore, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet could all play.
Villa’s season has been mixed with impressive wins against Liverpool and Arsenal but shocking defeats to lesser sides. Smith will hope the loss of Barkley does not impact their chances of a win in east London too heavily.
Grealish or Gascoigne
Jack Grealish’s unbelievable form has seen major comparisons with former England legend Paul Gascoigne as well as persistent links with a move away.
“Things will change a lot, I’m not blind to the attention of the past few weeks. That’s the world we live in and the industry that I am in,” said Grealish
“I have got to stay level-headed, I know now there will be a lot of eyes on what I am doing on and off the pitch. Years ago I didn’t ever think it was pressure on the pitch, I just thought off the pitch that I was ‘Jack from Solihull’.”

“I thought I could go out and do what I want, you know. As you get older you learn. You learn that you are a hero to a lot of young lads, and a role model. That means you need to just watch what you are doing.”
“That doesn’t mean I won’t make mistakes, I probably will. I feel that I have grown up over the years, and hopefully I can keep doing that.”
Grealish will want to continue his stellar form to try and maintain his international place ahead of Euro 2020 being held in 2021.
