RoPS vs Aberdeen betting tips: Europa League qualifying match preview and predictions

RoPS vs Aberdeen prediction: RoPS 1-2 Aberdeen

It was all going so well for Aberdeen.

In last week’s first leg at Pittodrie, the Dons were by far the dominant side.

Sam Cosgrove had a great chance early on but he could not convert.

This was to become a theme of the evening.

Then, nine minutes before half time, Ryan Hedges’ cross found Niall McGinn who spun Kalle Katz and finished smartly.

Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Cosgrove did have his goal, scrambling home Jon Gallagher’s cross.

Aberdeen had numerous chances after that, forcing Antonio Reguero to make a string of excellent saves.

Then, in the very last minute of added on time, Lucas Lingman played in Tommi Jäntti who finished cooly.

A, potentially, vital away goal for Rovaniemen Palloseura.

In that first leg, Aberdeen had 36 shots with 15 on target.

RoPS meanwhile had just seven shots with only two on target.

However, that late goal from Jäntti means this tie is far from over.

RoPS vs Aberdeen: Who will win?

Rovaniemen Palloseura are 16/5 to win and win they must.

Aberdeen have won only four of their last 19 European away matches but are 3/4 on to repeat last Thursday’s victory.

A draw, which would do the Dons just nicely, is 12/5.

Over 2.5 goals is evens.

Both teams to score is 5/6.

Aberdeen to win and over 2.5 goals is 9/4.

Aberdeen to win and both teams to score is 14/5.

Rovaniemen Palloseura are 3/1 to qualify; Aberdeen are 2/9 to progress.

Sam Cosgrove has 22 goals in 51 appearances for Aberdeen. He is 16/5 to score first and 5/4 to make it two in two this season.

Niall McGinn was the other scorer last week. The Northern Irish winger is 15/2 to score first and 3/1 to net anytime.

Both Kokko and Niklas Jokelainen to score is 12/1.

Both McGinn and Cosgrove to score is 9/1.

RoPS vs Aberdeen: Match preview

Can Rovaniemen Palloseura get a rare European win?

In 2018, they finished second in the Veikkausliiga; the joint highest finish in their history.

The Finish League actually runs on an annual basis so RoPS are mid-way through their 2019 league season.

They are currently struggling in the table.

Pasi Tuutti’s side are tenth in a 12 team league, eight points outside the top six and only five points above bottom side Vaasan Palloseura.

They were given last weekend off to help prepare for this tie.

In Europe, their greatest achievement came in their very first European adventure.

In the 1987-88 Cup Winners’ Cup they beat Glentoran and then Vllaznia before losing to Olympique Marseille in the quarter-finals.

Since, they’ve won just two of six European qualifying ties reaching the second qualifying round twice.

They have not won any of their last seven European home matches but need to end that run in this one.

Will it be time to celebrate in Lapland?

Will the Dons march on?

As for Aberdeen, despite a very good performance, they were left frustrated last Thursday.

This tie could be wrapped up but they should take confidence from their performance.

Manager Derek McInnes has made no secret of his desperation to do well in Europe.

Every year between 2014 and 2017, his side were eliminated in the third qualifying round.

Real Sociedad, Kairat, Maribor and Apollon Limassol the sides who defeated them.

12 months ago, they took Burnley to extra time after a pair of 1-1 draws before losing in extra time at Turf Moor.

The 1983 Cup Winners’ Cup Winner and UEFA Super Cup Champions have only appeared once in a UEFA group phase and that was in the UEFA Cup in 2007/08.

McInnes would almost love nothing more than to take them there for the first time under him but they must get through this one first.

The winners of this tie will face either Fola Esch of Luxembourg or Georgian side Chikhura Sachkhere.

Aberdeen must make sure it is they who progress.

Pasi Tuutti is not expected to tinker with his XI too much after the first leg.

Spanish goalkeeper Antonio Reguero will once again be in goal after his man of the match display in the Granite City.

It will be an unchanged back four featuring captain Kalle Katz once again.

Fellow centre-back Mahamadou Sissoko will know Scottish football having made 85 appearance for Kilmarnock, winning the League Cup.

Taye Taiwo is a very experienced full-back.

He’s previously played for Olympique de Marseille, A.C. Milan and Dynamo Kyiv during his illustrious career.

There might be some changes to the midfield though.

Goalscorer Tommi Jäntti and Dutchman Tarik Kada are both likely to come in after cameo roles.

Eetu Muinonen and Sergio Llamas would make way.

Aleksandr Kokko will continue to lead the line, looking for his first goal of 2019.

Can this side turn the tie around?

As for Aberdeen, Derek McInnes is likely to stick with the team that was victorious last mid-week.

New club captain Joe Lewis will make his 144th appearance for the club between the sticks.

The defensive pairing of Scott McKenna and Mikey Devlin will continue to be vital.

Scott Wright will keep his place in midfield with Craig Bryson not up to full speed.

Funso Ojo joined from Scunthorpe United for £125,000 last week but is ineligible as he was signed after the first leg.

A midfielder who did make their debut last week was Jon Gallagher.

He’s on loan from MLS Cup Champions Atlanta United and was outstanding last week.

Ryan Hedges will also keep his place; he joined last month from Barnsley on a free transfer.

Sam Cosgrove will once again be up front.

If he is more clinical than he was last week, Aberdeen will be sure of a place in the next round.

James Wilson, Stevie May, Curtin Main and Connor McLennan will be amongst the substitutes.

Will it be successful trip to Lapland for the Dons?
