Roman Abramovich ‘livid’ with Chelsea after fan reaction came as a surprise to the Russian owner

Abramovich ‘livid’ at misinformation

Despite the obvious answer of money, many football fans of both the ‘Big Six’ and those outside were left wondering what the ultimate explanation was for the clubs involved to seemingly disregarded the thoughts and care of supporters to join the so-called Super League.

Chelsea fans made their voices heard yesterday evening, unaware that discussions were already underway to remove the club from the proposed league.

Petr Cech had to battle with supporters to get them to make room for the bus to enter the stadium.

However, it appears that owner Roman Abramovich was not at the centre of the club’s push to join despite having control over the club.

Reports suggest that those within the club advised him on what was best to take the club forward which meant joining the league.

However, having seen the total anger aimed at Chelsea and the other 5 English clubs, the Russian, clearly concerned about his perception in the eyes of those who he has brought success to over the last near two decades, instigated the withdrawal. This is said to have left the owner ‘livid.’

Chelsea fan groups unhappy

Chelsea announced last among Premier League clubs yesterday that the club would indeed be pulling out of the the European Super League talks.

“As reported earlier this evening, Chelsea Football Club can confirm that it has begun the formal procedures for withdrawal from the group developing plans for a European Super League,” it read on the club website.

“Having joined the group late last week, we have now had time to consider the matter fully and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interests of the Club, our supporters or the wider football community.”

The CST responded with a lengthy statement of their own in which they highlighted the lack of an apology to supporters as seen by Arsenal and Liverpool.

“The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust is appalled with the tone and insincerity of the statement issued by CFC today. We request a full and in-depth explanation as to why the board took the decision to turn their back on the European competition and for CFC to explain why they signed up to the Super League without prior consultation with their loyal supporters,” wrote the Supporters Trust.

“We are disappointed that an apology has not been included in the statement. The legacy of our club was put at risk for what appears to have been solely for financial gain.

“The CST presently have little or no confidence in our current leadership at board level. On Monday, Bruce Buck extensively defended CFC’s plan to remain in the Super League at a fans’ forum meeting.

“Buck, alongside [Guy] Laurence, appears to have given no consideration towards the loyal supporters, so their positions would seem untenable moving forward.

“Our relations with CFC will remain frayed until we have a better understanding of why this decision happened and we are assured that change and safeguards are put in place.

“The CST will not rest until we are comfortable that change and protections are put in place, because 116 years of history was jeopardised. This is our club and will remain our club.”

Whether an apology is to come or words from the owner publicly, for the moment, looks bleak.
