As per a report from RomaNews.eu, Serie A outfit AS Roma are interested in the signature of Arsenal star Granit Xhaka.
Xhaka, a 25-year-old deep-lying midfielder, has been on the books of Arsenal since 2016, when the Swiss international made the move to the Emirates from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach for a hefty fee potentially rising to £35 million.
However, despite having arrived in North London with a sizable reputation on his shoulders, Xhaka has since struggled to truly live up to the expectations placed on him by the Gunners’ faithful.
Having been brought in as what many viewed as the answer to the club’s long-standing problems in front of their back four, Xhaka soon proved that he was not up to the task of shielding Arsenal’s backline, with his rash, lapse-riddled showings on the defensive side of the ball having proven a major source of frustration at the Emirates.
However, Xhaka has shown promise in more of a deep-lying playmaker role, where he can make use of his tidiness on the ball and splendid range of passing.
A 3-man midfield looks set to be utilised by Unai Emery this coming season, and, with Lucas Torreira set to join the experienced Swiss international at the base of the Gunners’ midfield, many expect Xhaka to finally showcase what he is truly capable of on a consistent basis in North London.
Nevertheless, as per the aforementioned report from RomaNews.eu, the Basel youth product could yet be on the move this summer, if Serie A outfit AS Roma get their way.
The Giallorossi are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park this summer, with first-choice target Steven NZonzi (who is of course also a long-time target for Arsenal) having, to this point, proven difficult to secure a deal for.
As such, Eusebio Di Francesco and co. are said to have switched their attentions to Xhaka, though the likes of Hector Herrera and Tanguy Ndombele are also being considered.
