What could have been
Roma’s director Monchi has been speaking about Mohamed Salah this week and has claimed the club should have received more money for the Liverpool star.
The Egyptian star joined Roma from Fiorentina after coming to Italy on loan from Chelsea who he had failed to impress.
His time in Rome yielded much success and that put him back on the map of European football.
One of the clubs that were most interested in signing the player was Liverpool and they were willing to pay a hefty fee for him.
They sealed a deal and that has been repaid after the player scored his 30th goal of the season last night against Roma in the Champions League.
Roma’s sporting director Monchi has now revealed that the deal could eventually reach €50m but admits they could have got even more.
‘I still think the price could’ve been better for Salah, but it did give us the possibility of making other moves,’ he explained.
‘When I arrived, the Liverpool offer for Salah was €32m plus €3m in bonuses. In today’s football, players go wherever they want to.
‘At the end of the day, we could reach €50m with bonuses, but at that moment we had to sell and that was an important option.’
‘The Neymar and Kylian Mbappe transfers changed the market, but at that moment it was necessary that we sell.’
