Robert Firmino labelled a problem by former Liverpool striker amid Brazilian’s goalscoring struggles

Robert Firmino labelled a problem by former Liverpool striker amid Brazilian’s goalscoring struggles

Roberto Firmino’s Liverpool stint

Roberto Firmino made the move to Liverpool in 2015, after departing German outfit, Hoffenheim.

Throughout much of his stint in England, Firmino, alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, formed a deadly attacking trident, with all three having proven integral to Liverpool reaching two Champions League finals, and winning their first-ever Premier League title.

However, whilst Mane and Salah have still looked solid this season, Firmino has proven somewhat off the pace for a year or so now.

Yes, the Brazilian’s game, despite playing up top, is not just about goals. But even Liverpool’s fans would do well to argue that he has been close to his best of late.

Firmino’s finishing has been pretty dire, whilst his link-up play with the likes of Salah and Mane has not been what it previously was.

In 43 outings this term, the forward has notched just six goals and seven assists. In comparison, Diogo Jota has scored 12 and assisted one in 27 appearances, despite often featuring from the bench.

‘He is a problem’

Now, after his latest subpar display during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle at the weekend, Liverpool legend John Aldridge has been discussing the Brazilian.

Aldridge is a former striker himself, and scored 50 goals in 83 outings for the Reds, so he knows a thing or two about finding the net.

Writing in the Liverpool Echo on Tuesday, though, the Irishman voiced his opinion that Firmino has become ‘a problem’:

Look at Firmino, he is a problem. He has lost his mojo completely and I have been one of his biggest fans, but it has been like this for a long time now. It is evident to all the fans. Jurgen believes him, of course, and he is continuing to play to get himself out of the slump but it looks more and more unlikely the longer it goes on.

His demeanour is different and he drops into midfield to do a job there at times, but when you have a number nine on your back, your job is to score goals. I don’t want to dig him out too much because I have been one of his biggest fans for years. But having said that, as a No.9 at Liverpool you have to get your share of the goals that will get them team victories and that just is not happening.
