Robbie Fowler previews Man United vs Liverpool
In the Mirror on Sunday, former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler previewed Man United vs Liverpool.
When it came to the big picture, Fowler believes whichever side dominates in midfield will win:
For all the attacking talent on show today, for all the individual brilliance, nothing will be achieved by either team unless they get a foothold in midfield.
What matters is that war in midfield.
Nemanja Matic is likely to miss out
What Fowler didn’t know at the time of preparing his Mirror preview is that Nemanja Matic is likely to miss out for Man United.
Matic was nowhere to be seen on Saturday night as the United squad met up before the game.
If Matic misses the Liverpool match, that’s a blow for United.
Ole Gunner Solskjaer could turn to big summer signing Fred to show his ability.
Andreas Perriera could also fill in, or Scott McTominay may start.
Thunderbolts, deft flicks, acrobatic efforts and more. 😍

Man United’s ‘dodgy’ defence
For Fowler, however, he took time out to dig into Manchester United’s backline.
David De Gea is often heralded as the best goalie in world football.
However, when it comes to United’s current defensive unit, Fowler labelled them “dodgy”:
Let’s be straight about this, Manchester United have a dodgy defence.
That’s not me being biased – six clean sheets in the league all season tells you that. It’s improved, no doubt, but there are still weaknesses.
It’s true that Man United have conceded 35 goals in 26 matches so far this season. No one at Old Trafford would likely defend that record.
Yet, in context, Man United still have the seventh best defensive record in the Premier League this season.
Man United also come into the Liverpool game on the back of successive clean sheets.
