Rio Ferdinand the latest to call for Premier League season to be voided

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed his opinion that, for the safety of all involved, the remainder of the Premier League season should be definitively voided.

PL shut down

Following widespread calls for action to be taken, it was finally announced 10 days ago that all fixtures across the English football calendar had been postponed.

This came on the back of confirmation that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had tested positive for COVID-19.

Liverpool’s title charge halted

The Premier League followed the likes of Serie A and La Liga in calling a halt to domestic proceedings, as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on the sporting calendar worldwide.

Unlike in the likes of Italy and Spain, however, where tightly-contested title races were well underway, the destination of the title in England’s top-tier had been clear for some time before the decision was taken to postpone all fixtures moving forward.

Liverpool held a staggering 25-point lead over 2nd-placed Manchester City at the Premier League summit, with Jurgen Klopp’s men having required just 2 more wins to secure their first league title in 30 years.

As such, while the COVID-19 outbreak of course resulted in clubs across England taking a major hit, it was perhaps the Reds who were left feeling most aggrieved by the timing of the pandemic.

‘Just void it’

As things stand, the Premier League is actually scheduled to get back underway on the 30th of April.

Such a scenario would no doubt see Liverpool clinch the title within weeks, to finally bring an end to the club’s lengthy wait for domestic glory.

However, many feel as though the prospect of football returning to our screens within 6 weeks is not just optimistic, but completely unrealistic.

As a result, some have called for the campaign to be completely voided, to ensure maximum safety for all involved, and a fresh start when the new season begins.

And, as outlined above, one individual to have today provided their backing to such a course of action is Rio Ferdinand.

Writing on his Instagram page, Manchester United legend Ferdinand revealed his opinion that the only option to ensure ‘health isn’t compromised’ is to consider the campaign null and void, and cancel all remaining fixtures:

‘I just think the Premier League should just be voided. Just void it.’

The former English international was also keen to clarify that his statement was not based on his United past:

‘I know there are going to be a lot of Liverpool fans going ‘Oh Rio, it’s just because you support Manchester United and it’s Liverpool’.’

‘It’s not that, it’s just that I don’t see a way that it can be done, where health isn’t compromised. Simple as that.’
