Manchester United fans best not bother getting their hopes up over Raphael Varane, according to Craig Burley at least.
The ESPN pundit was withering in assessing United’s chances of landing the player, and thinks that no player in their right mind would leave Real Madrid for a side who are struggling in their own league and are fighting for a place in the top four of the Premier League.
He said: “Forget it.
“Why would you leave Real Madrid to go to Man United? Have you seen them play?
“Honestly, why would you go to that team at the moment from Real Madrid? Not happening.”
“Harry Maguire, they’re talking about him, I saw some headlines.
“It’s the usual scenario, I don’t think that’s happening.”
When it comes to the two players United are thought to be looking to replace – Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, it seems that Burley thinks only one will be leaving, with it being too hard to replace the both of them – and joked that Smalling’s dive meant he should be the one to go.
There’s no denying the majority of fans have wanted to see the back of the pair for some time – and that Mourinho knows he needs more strength and depth in his side if he wants to challenge Manchester City next season – not to mention fighting for the Champions League as well – where clean sheets and keeping the opponent from scoring away goals is vital.
“He should leave alone for that dive at the weekend,” Burley said.
“We know him and Jones are not his (Jose Mourinho’s) favourites but we also know that (Eric) Bailly’s been injured and we know (Victor) Lindelof has been pretty poor.
“So, is he going to sell the two of them? Probably not. One of them might go, it’s a guessing game.”
