Liverpool can keep Mo Salah this summer – despite growing interest from Real Madrid.
That’s the view of Paul Merson, who thinks that all sides will be focusing on the summer and how they can stop Manchester City in the Premier League – and that Liverpool need not only to buy other players but also to win trophies, and if they show Salah they’re capable of doing that, he’ll have no reason to leave them.
“It’s proven this league – how many times have teams won the league and then gone away and run away with it the next season?” said Merson on Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“There will be teams planning now for next season to make sure they stop Man City.
“But can Liverpool stop Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus coming in for Salah? He’s going to be hot property. You don’t get this many goals. It’s a phenomenal season to get 30-odd goals.
“If you get 30-odd goals for a Sunday morning football team, you’re good.
“To get it at Liverpool and play the way he’s played, it’s going to be a worry for me, can Liverpool keep him?
“We’re going to talk about £100 million again.
“If I’d have said this last year you’d have gone ‘Oh no, [Philippe] Coutinho will be there’. He went [to Barcelona in January].
“That’s the worry they’re going to have. Because he’s done so well, will he be sold? They won’t want to sell him but money talks.”
The club will also have to show Salah that they mean to move forward and build on this season.
Getting to the Champions League semi-finals and possibly beyond would be massive, but they will need to strengthen once again if they want to win the league – and bring in players to make their side better and possibly replace ones they might lose, such as Emre Can, who looks like going on a free this summer.
