Rest for Kane? Jose Mourinho confirms Carlos Vinicius in line for Premier League action

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Carlos Vinicius is primed for an increase in Premier League playing time over the weeks ahead.

Spurs stint

Brazilian hitman Vinicius of course made the move to north London last summer, on loan from Portuguese giants Benfica.

The deal, at the time, was viewed as something of a masterstroke on the part of the Spurs hierarchy, with Vinicius having been fresh off the back of a stellar campaign.

All told, across 2019/20, the 25-year-old notched a hefty 24 goals and 13 assists.

To say that he has since struggled to reach such heights in the English capital, though, would be putting it lightly.

Vinicius, thus far, has managed a respectable 9 goals in Tottenham’s colours. All of his strikes, though, have come between the Europa League and FA Cup, with the hitman yet to get off the mark in the Premier League.

‘Going to play’

Vinicius’ lack of production in the English top-flight, in his defence, of course comes with the South American playing second fiddle to Harry Kane.

In truth, it was never likely that Tottenham’s star man and leader would be shifted from his automatic starting berth by a loanee, but Vinicius’ solitary start across the club’s 24 league outings thus far has no doubt nevertheless left him altogether disappointed.

As outlined above, however, if the latest comments on the part of the striker’s boss are anything to go by, then Vinicius looks set to be rewarded for his patience over the weeks ahead.

Speaking during a press conference ahead of Spurs’ meeting with Burnley this weekend, Jose Mourinho was drawn on the situation of his on-loan attacker.

And, after reiterating that Vinicius’ lack of game-time simply stems from being in direct competition with Kane, the Portuguese tactician went on to confirm that the 25-year-old is ‘going to play’ in the Premier League:

‘He has one problem, and the problem is Harry Kane. It’s as simple as that. You need to be a special guy, you need to be a special heart, a special mentality, a special feeling in relation to what you mean for the team, what the team expects from you.’

‘To be a striker in the same team as Harry Kane then you need to be a special guy, always motivated, always happy to have one minute, five minutes or start the game. He is giving us what we want.’

Mourinho continued:

‘In the Premier League he is going to play because we have so many matches that Kane cannot play every match. First season in a country is never easy, especially a South American player that doesn’t speak the language, that is the first time he leaves a certain comfort zone.’
