Referee apologises to Portugal coach after mistakenly not allowing Ronaldo goal

Ronaldo storms off

Controversy erupted at the end of the Portugal vs Serbia match, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s seemingly clear winner in the final seconds was not given by the match officials, who considered the strike not to have crossed the line.

This sent Ronaldo into a fit of rage, with the attacker having failed to see out the final seconds of the game after storming off and slamming down his captain’s armband. He had been booked for protesting to the assistant referee prior to walking off.

This had little bearing on the fact that the match had but seconds to go. However, it has caused fury across social media in response. VAR was not present to preside over the incident, and the officials were therefore solely responsible for the decision.

Referee apologises

Amazingly, official Danny Makkelie has since spoken with Portugal boss Fernando Santos, and apologised for getting the decision wrong, even going as far as to reveal his embarrassment.

“The referee apologized to me in the booth and told me he was embarrassed,” said Santos.

“I was in the dressing room with him and apologized to me. He had told me on the pitch that he was going to see the images and that if it was the case he was calling me to apologize and so it was. It is the second time in a qualifying phase that they apologize to me after the game.

“I told him on the pitch that there was no VAR or goal line one of the things he told me was that the goal line was important but I told him that the ball was half a meter inside the goal.

“There was no obstacle between the goalkeeper and the goal line. problem because we drew. We have to rethink. The referees are human and make mistakes, but that’s why there is the VAR and the goal line technology to avoid this.”

The 2-2 result means that Portugal remain behind Serbia on goal difference, with both on 4 points in World Cup qualifying Group A.
