The reason Jack Wilshere missed out on the World Cup

Missed out

Jack Wilshere  missed out on the England squad due to his fitness levels, as it seems Gareth Southgate eventually decided not to pick the player as he felt Wilshere might not be reliable enough.

That’s according to Sol Campbell, who of course calls himself one of the greatest minds in football, and he thinks that England will miss Wilshere but understands why the player missed out.

“You need someone to open it up,” Campbell said on Sky Spots.

“You know, take on a player in a tight kind of situation.

“Then commit someone else, someone else comes in and they have to open it up and free another forward.

“He can do that. He’s very good at doing that.

“So I think England will miss that type of close control when you need someone just to do something special, open it up and then maybe get a cross or a ricochet or whatever or put the team you’re playing against under pressure.

“If he’d have been fit all the way through the season, I’d think he’d definitely be in the squad.

“He’s got a lot of quality.”

Jonjo Shelvey

New contract

Wilshere wasn’t the only creative midfielder to miss out on the squad, with Jonjo Shelvey also omitted and while the latter will now enjoy his summer, Wilshere needs to make sure he gets a new deal with Arsenal and sorts out his club future out now.

Given long serving manager Arsene Wenger has now left, it remains to be seen just what the new manager will want, and if Wilshere will be part of those plans.
