Real Madrid’s major injury problems before Atletico derby

In another twist to the start of the new La Liga campaign, Real Madrid slumped to a very disappointing 3-0 loss away to Sevilla on Wednesday.

Los Blancos were also unable to capitalize on Barcelona’s shock 2-1 defeat to Leganes on the same night.

Sadly for new Real boss Julen Lopetegui, he will face another stern test on Saturday.

In desperate need of an immediate response, Madrid will welcome bitter rivals Atlético to the Bernabéu.

The pair last met back in August when Diego Simeone’s men picked up a 4-2 win and also lifted the UEFA Super Cup.

To make matters worse, the former Spain manager will be going to battle without several key players.

Marcelo injury update

Just to add to what is becoming a very tricky start to life in the Spanish capital, Lopetegui was forced to withdraw full-back Marcelo with 15 minutes to go.

The 30-year-old hobbled off with a calf injury that forced his teammates to play out the final stages with 10 men.

Appearing in some distress, the 58-cap Brazil international is almost a certainty to miss this week’s Madrid derby.

Speaking after their defeat on Wednesday, Lopetegui confirmed the extent of Marcelo’s injury.

“It seems that he has torn his calf, but we will have to wait and see for the medical tests tomorrow,”

In a side that have now kept just one clean sheet in their last five La Liga outings, the Brazilian will undoubtedly be a huge miss on Saturday.

It is believed that Marcelo will be looking at roughly three weeks on the sideline.

Lacking in defensive options, the Madrid boss is likely to play the versatile Nacho at left-back.

Real Madrid’s injury list

At least Marcelo won’t be short of company in the stands.

Lopetegui is also unlikely to be able to call upon both Isco and right full-back Dani Carvajal.

Spanish international Isco missed Wednesday’s trip after undergoing surgery on his appendix.

While the 26-year-old Carvajal is suffering with an unspecified muscle injury.

The Madrid academy product sustained the injury in his sides 3-0 win over Roma in their Champions League opener.

He has since missed their last two outings against Espanyol and Sevilla.
