RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid betting prediction: RB Leipzig 1 – 1 Atletico Madrid

Leipzig face Atletico Madrid at the Estádio José Alvalade on Thursday for this UEFA Champions League Quarter Final match.

All remaining UEFA competition matches will be single-leg and played in neutral venues. Therefore, this match is being played at the home of the local Liga NOS team, Sporting Clube de Portugal, in Lisbon.

Leipzig’s path to the Quarter Finals saw them top Group G ahead of Lyon, Benfica, and Zenit Saint Petersburg. They faced Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16, defeating them in both legs to win 4-0 on aggregate.

Atletico Madrid have had the much more difficult path of the two sides. They escaped Group D as runners up to Juventus. Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow were the sides pushing them for a place in the knockout stages.

They then faced the Premier League’s runaway leaders, Liverpool. They likewise won both legs of their last 16 match, defeating the Reds 4-2 on aggregate to book their place among the last 8.

The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of Atalanta vs Paris Saint-Germain. You can read our preview of that match here.

RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid: What are the betting odds?

Leipzig’s form coming into this match is patchy at best. They failed to win back-to-back games since the restart and only have one win in their last four matches. This sees them start the game as the underdog at 21/10 to win the tie over 90-minutes.

Die Roten Bullen have drawn most of their games recently. Seven of their last thirteen matches have ended in a stalemate. Atletico are no stranger to drawing games either. No side in La Liga drew as many matches last season as Simeone’s side, with sixteen tied matches. The 11/5 odds for a draw over 90 minutes look good value.

Atleti are unbeaten in all competitions since 8th February. Their record in that time includes eleven wins and seven draws in eighteen matches. They start the match as favourites at 11/8.

RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid: Recommended bets

Emil Forsberg and Marcel Sabitzer are Leipzig’s joint-top scorers in this competition this season, along with Timo Werner, with four goals. The pair are both available at 3/1 to get on the scoresheet on Thursday. In addition, they are 17/2 to do be the game’s first scorer.

With the absence of Poulsen and Werner, Patrik Schick looks almost certain to lead the line for Leipzig here. This sees him start the match as the favourite of those playing for the German side to get a goal here, at 12/5. Of his ten Bundesliga goals this season, three have been the first goal in the game. You can back Schick to open the scoring on Thursday at 13/2. Likewise, the same odds are available for him to score the final goal in the game.

Alvaro Morata is Atleti’s top scorer in this competition, with three goals. Of his sixteen goals this season in all competitions, six have been the game’s opening goal. Unsurprisingly then, he is the favourite to open the scoring on the night at 5/1. Or you can back the Spanish international to get on the scoresheet at any time, at 7/4.

RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid: Match preview

Atletico are very familiar with German opposition in UEFA competitions. They have faced a side from the Bundesliga on forty-four occasions and have twenty-one victories. They have lost on sixteen occasions also.

In Diego Simeone’s time as manager, their record is eight wins, three draws and five defeats from sixteen matches. When they have met German sides in the knockout stages in the last nine years, they have advanced on all four occasions.

Leipzig doesn’t have the same level of experience of knockout competitions or Spanish opponents. They have never faced a Spanish side in a competitive fixture in their short history.

Whether or not this will count for much remains to be seen.

Why it likely won’t be an open game

Atletico have a reputation for their defensive football and grinding out results.

This is borne out with the data, with their games averaging just 2.38 goals shared between the two teams; the competition’s lowest of all remaining sides. Atleti also has the lowest average expected goals for their matches. Only 2.82 xG worth of chances are created in matches involving the side from Madrid.

RB Leipzig are not far off that number, with just 2.99 xG worth of chances being created in their matches. This ranks the teams as the most ‘boring’ to watch in the competition. Particularly when compared to the likes of Atalanta (4.14 xG), Bayern (4.03 xG) and PSG (3.94 xG) matches.

None of this information will come as a surprise though. This match is expected to be a very tactical battle between two of the biggest names in football management; Diego Simeone and Julian Nagelsmann.

Timo Werner

RB Leipzig team news vs Atletico Madrid

The big news for Leipzig is the loss of Timo Werner. Werner chose not to complete the Champions League campaign with Leipzig, explaining that he had to ‘hurt one side’ and chose to leave Leipzig for Chelsea early.

He is one of four players removed from Leipzig’s UEFA Champions League squad. The others include Ethan Ampadu, Frederik Jäkel, and Hannes Wolf. However, Leipzig U17 striker Hugo Novoa has been added to their squad for the remainder of the competition.

Hee-chan Hwang, who was signed from Salzburg to replace Timo Werner, cannot be registered for this competition.

Yussuf Poulsen missed the final seven Bundesliga games with an ankle injury. Therefore, he is rated as a major doubt to be involved here.

Patrik Schick also missed the final game of the season with a knee problem. As Leipzig’s only senior striker option, Leipzig will be praying he is fit to start come Thursday.

Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer also played no part in Leipzig’s final game of the Bundesliga campaign. Although, both are expected to be involved against Atleti.

Atletico Madrid team news vs RB Leipzig

News broke on Sunday evening that two Atletico Madrid players had tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, the players in question, Sime Vrsaljko and Angel Correa, will now be unavailable for the rest of the tournament.

Thomas Partey is a major doubt for the match with a muscle problem. Therefore, Saúl will likely be partnered in midfield with either Llorente or Koke should he fail his fitness test.

João Félix missed three games towards the end of Atleti’s La Liga campaign with an ankle injury. However, he made a thirty-minute cameo appearance in their final league games of the season against Sociedad. He is expected to be fit to start on Thursday evening.

Diego Simeone’s side largely picks itself. The main decisions he will make will be at right-back, choosing between Trippier or Arias. Likewise, who will partner João Felix in the attack between Diego Costa or Alvaro Morata.
