Rangers vs St Joseph’s betting tips: Europa League qualifying match preview & predictions

Rangers vs St Joseph’s prediction: Rangers 6-0 St Joseph’s

After a big win at Victoria Stadium last mid-week, Rangers are all but through to the next round.

The first leg was actually goalless at half time but, just four minutes after the interval, Barišić’s cross picked out Ryan Jack who volleyed home.

Less than six minutes later, Sheyi Ojo marked his debut with a goal; pinching the ball off Mauri Torres and curling home.

It was three soon after.

Borna Barišić’s free-kick bounced on the goal line before being slotted in by Connor Goldson.

On closer inspection, it’s clear it was the Croatian’s goal.

Late on, substitute Alfredo Morelos got his name on the scoresheet; the Colombian heading home a cross from James Tavernier.

4-0 it finished in Gibraltar and this second leg is merely academic.

Will Rangers win big again?

That comfortable win last Tuesday was the perfect start to the season for Rangers.

Last season, the Gers defeated Shkupi, Osijek, Maribor and Ufa to make it all the way to the UEFA Europa League group stages.

There, they were bitterly disappointed as they were narrowly eliminated from a group containing Villarreal, Rapid Vienna and Spartak Moscow.

They’ll be targeting a return to the group stages this year.

Domestically, Rangers reached the League Cup semi-finals and the Scottish Cup quarter-finals last season but were beaten by Aberdeen in both.

Also, they finished second, nine points behind Celtic in the Premiership.

The primary aim of course for this season will be to win silverware but a good start in Europe can only help that too.

The winners of this tie will face either Cork City of Ireland or, a side Rangers know very well, Progrès Niederkorn from Luxembourg.

Either way, they will fancy their chances of winning that tie too so how will they look in their first home game of 2019/20?

The biggest game in St Joseph’s history

What an occasion this’ll be for St Joseph’s F.C.

Undoubtedly, this’ll be the biggest match of their 107-year history.

Before this season, they’d played just two European ties.

In 2017 they lost 10-0 on aggregate to AEL Limassol and last year they lost on penalties to B36 Tórshavn.

This year, they entered at the preliminary round where they took on FC Prishtina of Kosovo.

In the first leg at Fadil Vokrri Stadium, they fell behind to a 28th minute penalty but weren’t behind for long.

Juanfri equalised just three minutes later and 1-1 it finished in Pristina.

In last Tuesday’s second leg, late goals from Federico Villar and then Juanfri again saw them to a 2-0 win.

A first ever European victory for the Saints and it sets up this huge clash with Rangers.

This is a club that has won the Gibraltar Premier Division only once in their history and that was in 1996.

Despite losing 4-0 last week, it will still be an amazing experience for these semi-professional players to play in front of over 50,000 fans.

Surely the aim for the Saints will be to keep the score down so can they do just that?

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard has some decisions to make as he currently has a squad of 32 senior players to choose from.

Allan McGregor is the undisputed number one goalkeeper.

He’s started 53 games since returning to the club last summer, keeping 25 clean sheets.

In defence, Nikola Katić and Connor Goldson appear to once again be the first choice centre-back partnership just as they were at the beginning of last season.

Borna Barišić got a goal and an assists last mid-week and will keep his place at left-back.

Filip Helander joined the club from Bologna for £3.5 million last week but is ineligible having joined after the first leg.

In midfield, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara are very much the preferred duo at the base.

Further forward, there is an array of options.

Scott Arfield is not available though as his Canada side only went out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup two and a half weeks ago.

It’s actually expected to be the same attacking trio as last week of Ojo, Davis and Jones.

There is likely to be a change up top though.

After scoring off the bench in the first leg, Alfredo Morelos is expected to displace Jermain Defoe.

The England international will be a substitute alongside Joe Aribo, Greg Docherty and Greg Stewart who could all make an impact if called upon.

It’s simply a question of how many will Rangers get in this one.

Raúl Procopio Baizán’s squad consists entirely of part-time players.

14 from Spain, nine native Gibraltans and one from Buenos Aires in Argentina.

In goal, Francisco Javier Mateo is expected to keep his place ahead of Gibraltar international Jamie Robba.

In defence, Ezequiel Rojas is back from suspension so will come in for Daniel Guerrero

In midfield, new signing Juanma will keep his place ahead of Juan Manuel González.

Up front, Boro and Juanfri were both on target in the preliminary round.

Can either get a famous goal in this one?
