Ralph Hasenhuttl tells Frank Lampard why he is not getting the best from Timo Werner

Timo Werner

Werner’s struggles

Timo Werner joined Chelsea in the summer from RB Leipzig and has since failed to replicate the same prolific form which earned him the move to England. Frank Lampard and Chelsea have struggled to get the best out of many of their summer signings including fellow German international Kai Havertz.

The striking situation at Chelsea is such that the established quality of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud in combination with injuries throughout the season to wide players such as Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech, has pushed Werner into a wider role.

At 101 we published a tactical analysis of Werner and why the wider position is not going to get the most from the German international earlier in the season. If you would like to find out more about that you can read the piece here.

“The Premier League is a little bit different to my old league. It’s tougher than I thought. The contact here is harder than in Germany, it’s what I expected but not like this,” Werner said when asked about his struggles this season.

Chelsea play tonight against Leicester City in a match which is pivotal to both side’s chase for a Champions League qualification spot this season. Whether Werner will play as a central striker is yet to be seen.

Hasenhuttl’s advice to Lampard

Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl was previously in charge of Timo Werner’s former club RB Leipzig. Having worked with the player, the Austrian coach has offered some advice to Frank Lampard of how he might get the best from the German.

“I know Timo very well and I have seen him in situations where he was not good,” said Hasenhuttl.

“Most of the time when I have seen this is because of the reason that the game doesn’t fit to him. The team didn’t play in the way he can bring his best on the pitch, I think.”

“He is definitely a player where you have to adapt your game on him. If you do this, he will give you everything you need from a striker. But therefore, he has some qualities you really have to focus on.”

“But yeah, you really need to bring him into his best position so he can bring his strength on the pitch and then, for me, he is one of the best strikers in Europe,” added Hasenhuttl, who has Saints level on points with Chelsea in the Premier League.”

His ‘best position,’ as Hasenhuttl alludes to, is in reference to a central striking position instead of a wider birth. It is interesting that Hasenhuttl was so open and honest with his encouragement of Lampard to improve the forward, considering Southampton’s strong start to a season which has seen them tipped to possibly push for another European qualification place themselves.

The advice may come back to bite the Austrian coach if in fact Werner does begin to start firing and his form improves Chelsea to the point that Southampton are knocked out of the race for one of the places.
