Ralph Hasenhuttl provides explanation for Danny Ings being benched vs Palace

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has this evening revealed why he opted to bench top-scorer Danny Ings for his side’s meeting with Crystal Palace.

Southampton visit Palace

The Saints are currently locked in Premier League action with Roy Hodgson’s men at Selhurst Park.

Southampton headed into proceedings searching for an immediate bounce-back result, having seen their fine recent spell of form brought to an abrupt halt at the weekend.

On the back of 5 wins and a draw from their previous 6 across all competitions, the St. Mary’s outfit surrendered a 2-goal advantage to eventually fall to a 3-2 defeat at home to Wolves.

The opening 45 minutes at Palace this evening, though, have seen Southampton back on song.

A 22nd-minute strike from Nathan Redmond has sent the Saints into the interval a goal to the good.

‘Don’t want to take the risk’

Southampton’s advantage, though, comes despite the club’s star man to this point in the campaign, in the form of Danny Ings, having been benched from the off.

The starting XI opted for by Ralph Hasenhuttl this evening lined up as follows:

As such, speaking ahead of kick-off, the Saints boss was inevitably drawn on his decision to leave Ings out, with Hasenhuttl having cited the club’s FA Cup meeting with Spurs at the weekend as the reasoning behind his top-scorer’s omission at Selhurst Park:

‘Danny [Ings], we don’t want to take the risk with. Another game on Saturday and we need him [for that] so he’s coming from the bench today.’
