Raheem Sterling out of England vs Montenegro

Man City star Raheem Sterling will play no part in England’s match against Montenegro on Thursday.

That’s after Sterling was involved in a confrontation with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez at St. George’s Park on Monday.

Liverpool 3- Man City 1

The backdrop for the bust-up was Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Man City on Sunday.

Liverpool’s victory opened up a nine-point lead over City in the Premier League.

Sterling, of course, moved from Liverpool to Man City several seasons ago.

What happened with Sterling & Joe Gomez?

All the papers report on the bust-up being between Sterling and Gomez.

Starting with the Times, readers are told:

Sterling is said to have lost his temper with Gomez when the 22-year-old centre back arrived at St George’s Park, and began shouting in his face, with stunned team-mates quickly realising it was not just a jokey exchange.

In the Guardian, readers are told about how Sterling and Gomez needed to be separated:

The incident, which began with some choice words, ended with the pair having to be pulled apart and immediately forced the England manager into an unwanted decision.

What was said between Sterling & Gomez?

That issue is picked up in the Mirror, who claim:

Manchester City star Sterling is understood to have tried to provoke a reaction from Gomez and witnesses said they heard him ask the Liverpool defender whether he was “still the big man.”
