PSG to be crowned 2019-20 Ligue 1 champs, Marseille & Rennes set to qualify for 2020-21 Champions League

PSG to be crowned 2019-20 Ligue 1 champions

As confirmed by L’Equipe reporter Joel Domenighetti, PSG will be crowned 2019-20 Ligue 1 champions.

This will be the 7th straight season PSG have won the league.

The decision comes a couple of days after the French football season was ended by the government.

French Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, has banned all public events, including all Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches, before August 2020.

The decision to confirm PSG as champs can be roundly seen as a formality.

PSG were 12 points clear of Marseille when the league was suspended.

Joel Domenighetti has further reported that the final standings of the 2019-20 Ligue 1 will be left ‘as is’.

Marseille & Rennes: Champions League qualification

French reporter Nicolas Puiravau has claimed that Marseille and Rennes have qualified for the 2020-21 Champions League.

Marseille, after finishing second, should gain direct entry into the Champions League’s group stage.

As for Rennes, who will play in the competition for the first time, it’s unclear whether Rennes will start that competition in the playoffs or at the group stage.

Relegation & promotion from Ligue 1

When it comes to the relegation from Ligue 1, Nicolas Puiravau claims that Amiens and Toulouse will go down.

At the same time, Lens and Lorient will be promoted from Ligue 2.

What we still don’t know in France

Three clubs are usually promoted and/or relegated between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

The third slot is decided in a playoff between the third lowest side in Ligue 1 – Nimes – and the third highest team in Ligue 2 – AC Ajaccio.

It’s unclear what will happen regarding this issue.

Also, qualification for the 2020-21 Europa League remains murky.

Lille, in 4th, should go straight into the Europa League group stage. But it’s unclear which other two Ligue 1 clubs will also play in that competition.

Those places are usually filled by the winners of the two French domestic cup competitions.

Before the French season ended, those finals pitched PSG vs St Etienne (Coupe de France) and PSG vs Lyon (Coupe de la Ligue).

But, it’s worth noting that the Dutch League, after scrapping their season, opted to ignore their cup competitions, handing those Europa League spots back into the league.

If Ligue 1 follow the same path, then Reims (5th) and Nice (6th) will qualify for the 2020-21 Europa League.
