There was plenty of fanfare on social media after news began to spread that French giants PSG had decided to donate a whopping sum of €40m to Brazilian club Chapecoense.

A plane carrying the Brazilian football team and others crashed in Colombia this morning, killing 76 of the 81 passengers on board.

In an era of post-truth news, The Sport Bible and many other social media accounts happily gained thousands of retweets for claiming PSG had informed FIFA of their €40m donation.

Le Parisien report the truth

French newspaper Le Parisien actually looked for evidence before reporting on viral news that had no credible source.

Le Parisien got in touch with PSG and immediately informed their Twitter followers that the €40m donation story was in fact false.

The tweeted “PSG denies donating €40m to Chapecoense”.
