Crystal Palace supporters have been left questioning the consistency of Premier League officiating after Ashley Barnes’ furious reaction to not being awarded a penalty against Southampton.
The incident follows Wilfried Zaha being shown a second yellow card for sarcastically applauding the referee after being booked.
However, Ashley Barnes, having just been booked for diving, was not punished for his reaction to being shown yellow.
Zaha vs the Premier League: Lack of consistency slammed after Ashley Barnes incident vs Southampton
Barnes was fuming with the referee after he failed to win a penalty and was instead booked for simulation.
The 29-year-old squared up to Anthony Taylor and was shouting in the officials face.
However, he managed to avoid being shown a second yellow for his dissent.
His reaction was no worse than Zaha’s sarcastic appulse towards Andre Marriner on Wednesday which saw him booked.
The Ivorian has already been surrounded in controversy over his treatment from Premier League officials.
This afternoon’s incident at Turf Moor will certainly not help the officials’ case with Barnes avoiding a second yellow.
Crystal Palace fans fuming with lack of consistency
In midweek, Zaha got a second yellow for clapping a referee (fair enough). However, according to this ex-ref, because ‘pushun’ overcame Ashley Barnes, causing him to scream abuse in an official’s face while out of control, then it’s okay. Interesting.

A sarcastic clap gets Zaha a yellow card and sent off but Barnes raging, yelling at referees and spitting is perfectly fine ?? Where’s the consistency ?

Interesting that Ashley Barnes didn’t get a second yellow card after his reaction. Incredible…Zaha got sent of for much much less. But if I speak? I’ll be in big big trouble.

Ashley Barnes booked for diving. Gives the ref a volley of abuse. Doesn’t get a second yellow.
Explain how that’s worse than Zaha getting a second yellow for sarcastic applause @premierleague

Incredible to see the inconsistency in the PL referees this week. Zaha sent off for a foul and a sarcastic clap. Ashley Barnes given a talking to about dissent, booked for a foul and then the referee completely ignores the sarcastic clap. Has to be more consistency #bbcfootball

why was zaha sent off the other day for being sarcastic and clapping yet Barnes is shouting abuse at the ref and no action taken?
the consistency of these refs is embarrassing
