Liverpool crowned/Watford down

The 2019/20 English top-flight campaign of course came to a close two weeks ago.

A historic season, delayed for a 3 full months following the Covid-19 outbreak, eventually saw Liverpool emerge as worthy champions, to secure the Reds’ first league title in 30 years:

Elsewhere, a tense battle for Champions League football saw the rejuvenated Manchester United and Frank Lampard’s Chelsea join Man City in the top-4.

Leicester City’s stunning late season collapse, though, means that the Foxes face a season in the Europa League, with Brendan Rodgers’ outfit set to be joined by Tottenham and FA Cup winners Arsenal.

It was a mixed bag for the newly-promoted sides, as Sheffield United surprised the masses en route to a 9th-placed finish, Aston Villa survived the drop by the skin of their teeth, but Norwich were doomed to a swift return to the Championship.

Joining the Canaries in England’s 2nd-tier for the 2020/21 campaign, meanwhile, are Watford and Bournemouth.

Liverpool lead the way

As such, with the dust having now settled on another action-packed year of Premier League football, a chance to look back at 2019/20’s finest performers has been provided.

And, as outlined above, this has today seen the nominees for the English top-flight’s Player of the Season award revealed.

Champions Liverpool unsurprisingly lead the way, with 3 members of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, namely Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold, up for the prize.

No other club boast more than one nominee, though, with the remaining contenders coming in the form of Kevin De Bruyne, Nick Pope, Danny Ings and Jamie Vardy:

Elsewhere, those up for this year’s Young Player of the Year gong have also been revealed.

It is Manchester United deemed to have lead the way when it comes to shining young talent over the course of the season, with the Red Devils boasting 3 nominees – Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

Chelsea pair Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic are also up for the award, alongside Jack Grealish and Dean Henderson.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is the only player to have been nominated for both prizes.
