Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tried and failed to engineer January Chelsea switch – Mail

A major claim surrounding Arsenal star man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has emerged in the English media over the last 24 hours.

Auba’s uncertain future

Speculation surrounding the future of Gabonese hitman Aubameyang has of course been rampant for some time now.

This comes with the 31-year-old’s contract in north London set to expire next summer.

Amid another superb campaign, during which he has racked up 27 goals across all competitions, Aubameyang has inevitably been added to the respective wishlists of a number of Europe’s top clubs.

To this point, the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and Inter Milan have all been touted as potential summer landing spots for the former Borussia Dortmund man.

Failed Blues switch?

One of the more surprising sides to have been linked with a swoop for Arsenal’s talisman, though, have been Chelsea.

The Gunners’ London rivals are thought to have been keen on ‘Auba’ prior to their recent signing of Timo Werner, when Frank Lampard and co. were on the lookout for a proven top-class goalscorer ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

And, if the latest word stemming from the media is to be believed, then interest in a deal, previously at least, was very much mutual.

As outlined above, according to the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan, not only was Aubameyang eager to swap the Emirates for Stamford Bridge this past January, but the African himself in fact attempted to engineer a move:

‘Sportsmail understands that contact was made on behalf of the Arsenal striker.’

It is added that any potential transfer eventually fell apart due to Aubameyang’s hefty wage demands, with the prolific attacker having reportedly sought out a sum which would have made him ‘comfortably the highest-paid player in Chelsea’s history’.

Arsenal and Chelsea are of course set to go head to head in the finale of the FA Cup later today.
