Photo: Alex Telles' gesture before Man City's derby opener sums up Man United's defensive woes


 

A head-turning photo showcasing the efforts of Manchester United defender Alex Telles in the buildup to his side falling behind in this evening's derby has come to the fore online.

The moment in question came inside five minutes at the Etihad.

After some typically intricate football down the City left ultimately culminated in Bernardo Silva's cut-back finding Kevin De Bruyne in the visitors' area, the Belgian made no mistake in lashing beyond David de Gea:

As showcased in the footage above, it was Alex Telles who was left to pick up De Bruyne en route to City's midfield maestro opening the evening's scoring, with the Brazilian's sliding challenge, unfortunately from a Manchester United perspective, having arrived moments too late.

A still shot of the direct lead up to the goal, though, showcases the fact that Telles was far from the only one to blame from a Red Devils perspective.

The left-back, in fact, was left in something of a nightmare situation.

This came as Riyad Mahrez awaited a ball to the back post, whilst De Bruyne stood unmarked in the centre of the area.

Telles, in turn, attempted unsuccessfully to pass the job of marking the latter onto one of Bruno Fernandes or Jadon Sancho, both of whom were stood on the edge of the area:

Neither, however, responded in time, leaving Telles essentially marking two men, as the alarming lack of communication in Manchester United's backline was, once more, laid bare for all to see.

KDB at the double

To their credit, Manchester United did actually manage to drag themselves back on level terms at the Etihad, when Jadon Sancho put the finishing touches on a fine team move courtesy of a pinpoint bending effort beyond Ederson:

The superior quality boasted by hosts City, though, soon proved telling once more, as, just minutes later, Kevin De Bruyne added his 2nd of the day to restore the champions' advantage after both Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva went close:
