Phil Jagielka defends himself over Wolves red card challenge

Not convinced

Everton captain Phil Jagielka has defended his red card challenge against Wolves on Saturday which caused much controversy.

The Toffees were 1-0 up when the defender miss-controlled the ball and lunged to try and win it back, only to bring a Wolves forward down with a nasty challenge.

He was subsequently sent off and Everton conceded from the resulting free-kick after Ruben Neves found the top right corner.

While the game ended 2-2, there was still much debate over the decision to send Phil Jagielka off.

Marco Silva was adamant that it was probably not a red card, claiming ‘It looked a really harsh decision.’

The general consensus among pundits and fans was that it was a red card offence, but the player doesn’t see it that way.

‘Honest, strong tackle’

That is because he took to social media on Sunday to explain his feelings on the decision.

He claimed that he made an ‘honest, strong tackle’ and in his eyes won the ball despite getting the player after.

‘Well done boys for a battling performance! Congrats to @richarlison for ⚽️⚽️ on your debut.

‘As for me I had a bad touch then tried to make up for it with an honest strong tackle, in my eyes I made a good attempt to get the ball (which I did) and I also can see I got player after.

‘Gutted to be sent off but proud of the performance of the boys! COYB.’
