Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has this evening spoken out over where the Gunners’ priorities lie for the remainder of the campaign.
Arsenal have endured a somewhat hit-and-miss campaign to this point, under the guidance of new manager Unai Emery.
As things stand, the North Londoners sit in 5th-place in the Premier League table, 3 points adrift of 4th-placed Chelsea and 11 behind table-toppers Liverpool.
The most-noticeable contrast between the Gunners of last season and this, thus far, has been the fire and aggression s0-regularly showcased by Emery’s men.
In addition, Lucas Torreira’s addition to the capital giants’ midfield ranks has also provided some much-needed balance, with the diminutive Uruguayan’s tenacity and discipline having provided the ideal platform for the likes of Alex Iwobi, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to work their magic further forward.
Arsenal’s problems at the back
However, Arsenal’s long-standing defensive frailties have, for the most-part, remained prevalent to this point in the season.
The Emirates outfit have conceded 10 goals more than any of the Premier League’s top-4, and a massive 21 goals more than Liverpool.
As such, question marks remain over just how much Unai Emery will be capable of achieving in his debut campaign in North London.
‘To get into the top four’
And one of the Gunners’ stars, in the form of goalkeeper Petr Cech, has this evening opened up on exactly what his side’s targets for the remainder of the season are.
The former Chelsea man confirmed that, though lifting a trophy would represent a ‘good achievement’, Arsenal’s priority is to secure a spot in the Premier League’s top-4.
As per Goal.com, Cech explained:
‘Our priority is to get into the top four [so we can] be in the Champions League. And then you want to progress and evolve as a club, as a team.’
‘We have a new manager and obviously we set our targets. So if we can win a trophy together in the first season it would be a good achievement.’
‘You play every game to win and this time (vs Blackpool) we were in the FA Cup. We have the tradition as a club to do well. And if we can win it, we’d like to do so.’
‘It is the same with the Europa League. We started really well and are in the last 32.’
‘These are two targets but the Premier League remains a big objective, to get into the top four.’
