Need to win it

Pep Guardiola has spoken to the press ahead of  his side’s Champions League quarter final first leg with Borussia Dortmund tomorrow evening at the Etihad.

Manchester City are still on course for the quadruple, but with the Premier League practically sewn up, it is the European Cup which is missing from their trophy room and one of the main reasons the club brought the Spaniard to the club.

Guardiola played down talks of the quadruple, but his side are capable of creating history this season.

On whether his side are indeed favourites he responded:

“Why should we win the other competitions just because we are leading the Premier League? Bayern Munich are leading the Bundesliga, Atletico are leading the Spanish League. It is different. The only concern tomorrow is to try to win the game.”

“Win this game and after comes Leeds and after we got to Dortmund to win that game. After that, if we play good and deserve it go through. If not, we will try next season.”

When asked if City need to win it to be considered a big club he responded;

“We are already a big club but of course everyone is here and wants to try to do better than we have done in these competitions with our history and especially since we are together. “

Guardiola also discussed the impact Ilkay Gundogan has had this year at City, and is pleased he is getting recognition for his outstanding displays.

He also said of the German international;

“He is incredibly loved for the fact he is an incredible human. He thinks not just for himself but what is best for the team and when this kind of thing happens you have your rewards and deserve what you built. He is the same player.”

“I said many times the year we won the second Premier League he was incredible as a holding midfielder. Now he is our top scorer and that’s why he gets the recognition that I said he deserves. “
