Pep Guardiola has revealed that Manchester City new boy Riyad Mahrez could make his competitive debut against Chelsea in the Community Shield.
The Algerian signed for big money this summer and there is much expectation ahead of the new Premier League season.
Though, there were fears about how long it would take until he was able to make his competitive debut following an injury in pre-season.
Now, Guardiola has confirmed that fans have nothing to be worried about and he should still be able to play on Sunday.
‘Mahrez is good. He had a little bit of pain but he trained day before yesterday. I think so (he can play on Sunday),’ Guardiola told a news conference, as cited by ManCity.com.
‘Kevin and Sterling are not here but they will be back after the game on Sunday.
‘From Monday we will be back all together and think about what we have to do to keep last season’s level.’
The Community Shield clash on Sunday will be the first time of the season that Guardiola and Maurizio Sarri will go head to head.
The pair are known to be good friends and Guardiola has also been previewing his friendly clash.
“I am happy that he is here in the Premier League,” he continued.
“I will learn a lot to see his team every weekend. I saw three games – he gets it, the team in a short time plays like he wants.
“I think it will be a good game, always Chelsea is a big rival. Antonio was, Maurizio will be too. The style of play will be perfect for English football.”
Pep Guardiola glad Jorginho didn’t sign for Manchester City
Guardiola and Sarri have already gone head to head once this summer.
That was to sign Jorginho and it was Chelsea who won the race.
Though, Guardiola is glad they did.
