Pep Guardiola gives update on Man City’s January plans

Fernandinho key to City’s success

Despite having an outstanding start to the season, Manchester City are now four points behind 1st place Liverpool.

Man City started the season well but injuries and fatigue played a role in them going on a bit of a poor run.

For example, Fernandinho is integral to City’s style of play and is perhaps the most underrated member of their squad.

However, the Brazilian is also the only player City can rely on to do a job in the holding midfield role.

So, when Fernandinho was injured earlier this season, his absence was very much noticeable.

The 33-year-old would miss Manchester City’s games vs Crystal Palace and Leicester.

It is no surprise that City were not great in these games and went on to lose both.

Pep on Man City’s January plans

Earlier in the season, when City were still unbeaten in the league, Pep Guardiola said that Man City would not make any January signings.

Since then though, City have lost three league games and the need to support Fernandinho has become much more apparent.

As a result, Pep Guardiola was once again asked if City will bring anyone in this January, to which he responded:

“The big clubs don’t buy important players for just 6 months. If you have no injuries and are satisfied with your squad, you go with them.”

City have been linked with a number of replacements for Fernandinho, including Ajax’s Frenkie De Jong.

But it looks as though Guardiola will be waiting till the summer to bring in any fresh faces.

Man City’s next game sees them take on Wolves on Monday.

City are likely to be without Kevin De Bruyne after the midfielder walked straight down the tunnel after being subbed off vs Burton.
