Pep Guardiola explains why John Stones missed Manchester City’s win over West Ham

Pep Guardiola explains why John Stones missed Manchester City’s win over West Ham

Pep Guardiola has provided an explanation for centre-back John Stones missing out on Manchester City’s matchday squad vs West Ham on Sunday.

Manchester City see off West Ham

City would play host to West Ham earlier this afternoon.

The Citizens began the day having slipped down to 3rd in the Premier League table, following Liverpool’s 4-0 hammering of Southampton.

So, Guardiola’s men needed a win on Sunday to once again move clear of the Reds. And this, in turn, is exactly what transpired in a very snowy Manchester.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for Man City after 33 minutes. The hosts then held onto their 1-0 lead until the 90th minute, before Fernandinho added a second.

Substitute Manuel Lanzini made it 2-1 with 94 minutes on the clock, but it proved too little, too late for the Hammers, who are now in serious danger of slipping out of the top-four.

Man City, on the other hand, have moved to within touching distance of league leaders Chelsea.

Why John Stones missed out on West Ham game

Following his side’s latest victory, Pep Guardiola has provided an update on John Stones.

The Spaniard opted for a centre-back pairing of Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte on Sunday, but Stones was not even named on the bench.

Guardiola, though, has since explained why Stones missed out altogether, confirming that the stopper had a fever following the club’s meeting with PSG earlier this week:

“John [Stones] was not well the last two days. He had a fever after the game against PSG.”
